Concealed Cisterns: Installation and Maintenance Guide for Trade

Concealed Cisterns are one of the easiest, effective and most aesthetically pleasing choices a homeowner can make when designing what they want in their bathroom.

In the last decade, Concealed Toilet Cisterns have exploded in popularity with those in the trade getting asked to fit more and more of them to stay inline with contemporary consumer demand.

In this article, we’ll arm you with everything you need to know in order to fit a Concealed Toilet Cistern effectively in any bathroom set up, as well as tips to pass on to your customers regarding maintenance, ultimately avoiding any headaches for you down the line.

Firstly, what exactly is a Concealed Toilet Cistern?

A concealed cistern is a toilet cistern set up that is designed to hide behind a wall or within fitted furniture, the only part of the system that remains visible once installed is the flush button. Thus, creating an aesthetically pleasing and minimalist, modern toilet set up.

Which Dual Flush Concealed Cistern should you pick depending on if you’re working on a Residential or Commercial project?

At Roper Rhodes, we offer a variety of modern cisterns, giving you the coverage you need for any install. Always guaranteeing the perfect flush.

For residential projects, we recommend choosing between our Torrent Bottom Inlet Cistern, Cascade Side Inlet Cistern or our Comfort Height Cistern, depending on the application where the cistern needs to be installed.

These cisterns are designed to be fitted inside furniture, meaning they’re more aesthetically and practically at home in houses or apartments as opposed to commercial spaces.

For commercial work however, we recommend our In-Wall Concealed Cistern. Commercial properties often favour walled in applications as opposed to bathroom furniture, this cistern is the ideal product to accommodate these set ups.

It is worth noting that all of these dual flush cisterns are designed to fit floor mounted pans as opposed to wall hung toilet set ups. If you require a cistern for a wall hung toilet, please browse our Wall Hung Frame range.

How do Wall Hung Toilet Frame set-ups differ from standard Concealed Cistern installs?

Due to the heavy nature of a ceramic wall hung pan. Concealed Cisterns for these need to be supported through a Wall Hung frame set up. Requiring a frame to be securely fashioned to a sturdy wall, with the cistern within. As a standard floor mounted pan eliminates the weight strain issue, cisterns for these do not need the same level of strength and support.

How To Correctly install a Concealed Toilet Cistern into fitted furniture. Step by step.

Step 1: Attach the bracket

Before you look to install, check that the wall fixings are suitable for the surface the cistern is being fixed on to in the bathroom. Always check there are no concealed cables or exposed pipework where you’re looking to drill. Mark your fixing points, grab your drill, insert the wall fixings, then secure the bracket in place. The fixing bracket has two prongs, cut them both to fit the worktop in question.

Step 2: Mount the Cistern onto the wall bracket.

Remove your cistern cover and slide the cistern onto the bracket, take care when doing so to ensure a quality fit. Finish by securing with the screw provided with the Cistern.

Step 3: Cut the flush pipe to size and attach to the Concealed Cistern.

Cut the 50mm end of the flush pipe squarely, to provide the correct height to suit the pan, always make sure the tapered washer leads directly into the valve. Do not tighten the bottom nut when attaching, this is factory set. If water escape is experienced, check the pipe is inserted and the tapered washer is fully fitted. Also, be sure the flush bend is braced against the wall. This will ensure there’s no tension on the connections which could cause fittings to leak.

Step 4: Connect the water supply to the Cistern.

Be sure to use an approved double check valve to fluid category 3 in addition to an accessible service valve. Also, be sure that the inlet valve is fully tightened to the base of the tank.

Step 5: Install the push button to the Cistern

Insert your tubes through the Cistern cover and reattach. Then use your drill to create a 63mm circle opening in the front of your unit panel. Feed your button through and attach to the tubes. At Roper Rhodes Trade Solutions, we have a large collection of push buttons varying in style, size and finish. Meaning you always have the product you need to complete any bathroom set up.

Step 6: Fix the toilet.

When completing this step, support the flush pipe when locating the toilet onto it so the flush connection doesn’t break.

Step 7: Alter and check the flush volume.

The flushing volume can be adjusted until you find your desired flush. The tank is factory set to flush at 6 and 3 litres, but can be amended. Allowing full flush flexibility and creating a toilet set up that the end user is happy with.

Step 8: Amend the water level.

Adjust the fill valve to increase / decrease the water level, giving you the freedom to find the ideal flush for the toilet in question.

Step 9: Proceed with any final checks and clean the area.

Ensure the cistern cover is correctly clipped onto the tank, this will prevent any splash escaping. We also recommend you ensure that the connections are watertight before sealing into the furniture.

Step 10: Re-attach the front furniture panel

Now satisfied with the flush volume and water level, attach your front furniture panel back onto the unit slowly, ensuring the unit has full strength and is in place securely. This completes the cistern installation.
